About the Choir

Singer songwriter John Denver once said:  “Music does bring people together. It allows us to experience the same emotions. People everywhere are the same in heart and spirit. No matter what language we speak, what colour we are, the form of our politics or the expression of our love and our faith, music proves: We are the same.”

This sense of absolute equality in music has never been more evident than in the Open Arts Community Choir; an award winning, dynamic, inclusive choir based in Belfast, Northern Ireland.  The choir is an integral part of Open Arts, an organisation that engages with disabled people in delivering high quality arts activities, by promoting artistic excellence and encouraging the participation of people with and without disabilities.

The Open Arts Community Choir is inclusive. It features people with and without disabilities from every section of the community, and from age sixteen to sixty-six; all are united by their love of song.

GET INVOLVED!

The choir meets every Monday night from 7.15-9.15pm in Divis Community Centre, Belfast.

Big Choir Nights

The first Monday of every month is usually Big Choir Night, which is open to anyone aged 16+, with or without disabilities, with a love of singing.

Our next Big Choir Night is on Monday 2nd October at 7.15-9.15pm, and we request a nominal fee of £1 per person to cover the costs of refreshments.

Subsequent Monday nights are rehearsals with the Open Arts Community Choir (sometimes referred to as The Festival Choir) – this is an auditioned group of singers who tackle more challenging music and compete in choral festivals etc.

Auditions

This year’s auditions for the OACC Festival Choir are on Monday 2nd October 2017 at 7.15pm in Divis Community Centre.

We understand that auditions can be the most challenging part about joining a new musical ensemble, so please treat this time like a friendly mini voice lesson. We promise that you will feel welcome and we will start from whatever your level of ability.

“Try Before You Buy” Open Nights

This year we are hosting three Open Nights – on 11th, 18th & 25th September – where anyone aged 16 or over, with or without disability, male or female, and regardless of previous musical experience, can come and sample what it’s like to be a member of the choir… and if you like what you find, you can then audition to become a full member.

Please get in touch if you would like further information:

email bev@openartsni.org  or phone 02890 240765

We look forward to singing with you!
